Email Marketing for Engaging Church Communities

When was the last time you took inventory of how you were communicating with your church community? If you are a pastor or church leader, it is important to evaluate all of the ways and methods you disseminate information and updates to your congregation, not just on Sundays but throughout the week. Email marketing is a marketing tool you can add to your toolbelt to help you accomplish this.

If you have not done so already, it is probably a good idea to capture the email addresses of people in your congregation. Chances are many of them utilize email on a regular basis and would be happy to share with their home church if it means receiving the latest and greatest news, updates, and happenings within the church. Once you obtain a sizable list, it is time to develop your email marketing strategy!

What are some types of content you should include when sending emails to your church community? Here are a few to consider:

  • Weekly Update: This is an opportunity to remind church members about current message series topics, upcoming gatherings, announcements, sermon podcast episodes, and more. Think about this type of email as a one-stop shop for being “in the know” with what is happening at your church. The format could be similar to a newsletter, where each piece of content is organized into its own section within the body of the email.
  • Events: This is a great way to share exciting events taking place at your church or sponsored by your church. The email itself can even serve as the invitation to the event if designed properly and appropriately. You could also embed a video into the email publicizing the event to help generate buzz and excitement and entice your churchgoers to attend and also invite their friends and neighbors to attend.
  • Outreaches/Serve Opportunities: If you are hosting a Serve Day at your church or in your community, your church body should be the first to know! This is a practical way to share how they can be involved in meeting the needs of people in their city or town and how they can make an eternal difference for the Kingdom of God. You could also highlight your yearly short-term and long-term missions trip experiences and allow church members to sign up on the spot or request additional information.
  • Giving Impact: When the people in your church give financially to support your church’s mission, they want to know how their giving affects the bottom line. Much like donors want to know how their dollars are being used, your church members are most likely wondering the same. Taking a moment to thank them for their generosity and providing specific, tangible ways their support makes an impact will reinforce their future decisions to give again … and again … and again. Include the link to Give Online!

Whether you are a large-scale church with thousands of people or a small church with a few hundred, email marketing is a cost-effective way to communicate multiple messages to your congregation. Encourage your church family to sign up for your email list today!
